the purpose of the chapter is to explain the marketing function and the marketing mix and their importance to business , distinguish among markets , identify some common marketing practices , and outline the function performed by marketing managers .
producers today are usually separated from consumers by a complicated chain of brokers , wholesalers , agents and retail stores .
producers must make an effort to find out what kind of products consumers want and to create and offer these products for sale , they also must make efforts - through advertising and other means - to inform consumers about the goods and services that are available , product designs , pricing , and advertising all depend on knowing markets .

MARKETING ELEMENTS


marketing requires a mix of four p's : product development , price , placement and promotion
marketing systematizes business activities that
(a) plan products or services to satisfy actual needs and wants of consumers .
(b) price the products so they will suit the buying habits and purchasing power of potential customers
(c) place the products in the market for distribution .
(d) promote the products sale to and use by consumers .

these four activities , taken together , make up a marketing mix

product planing

concentrates on learning which goods and services consumers want and then designing products to meet these desires .

pricing

is a critical decision because it ultimately determines whether a product will be bought and , if so , whether it will be profitable .

product distribution

involves decisions abut warehousing and transportation and about whether to sell directly to the public or through various chains of intermediaries .

product promotion

product promotion is an important function that includes personal selling , advertising and direct sales promotion , such as free samples , point - of - purchase displays , and discount coupons .

basis to improve sales , marketing operations are especially apparent when new produces are introduced .
